NSF Fee (Paid or Returned)
When you do not have enough available funds in your account to cover a check or other item, the check or other item is considered an NSF item. Without notice to you, we may either pay the NSF item and overdraw your account (NSF Paid Item), or decline or return the NSF item without payment (NSF Returned Item). No fee will be charged if the total amount of overdraft(s) for the day is less than $10.“Overdraw your account” means that the balance in your account becomes a negative account balance (a balance that is below zero).
We pay NSF item(s) solely at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always, or ever, authorize and pay them. If we pay NSF item(s) that cause your account to be overdrawn on one or more occasions, that does not mean that we are obligated to continue paying future NSF item(s). We may pay all, some, or none of your NSF item(s), without advance or prior notice to you.
Special note about ATM withdrawals and one-time debit card transactions: These transactions could create an overdraft, even though American Bank declines ATM and one-time debit card transactions if the account has insufficient funds at the time of the authorization request. ATM withdrawals and one-time debit card transactions will not be assessed any NSF or Daily Overdraft Fee.
Daily Overdraft Fee
If your account is overdrawn after all transactions for the day have posted, your account will be charged a Daily Overdraft Fee (unless the negative balance is due to an ATM and/or one-time debit card transaction). This fee begins on the second business day the account balance first becomes overdrawn. The fee will not be charged on non-business days (weekends or holidays). No fee will be charged if the over drawn balance in the account is in a negative status not to exceed -$10 per day.
How to avoid NSF and Overdraft Fees
You can avoid paying fees for NSF and/or Overdrawn balances by being sure that you always have adequate funds in your account to cover all of your transactions. You can enroll in free Online Banking, Mobile Banking or use our 24 hour telephone banking access to keep track of your account balance.
You may also avoid NSF fees by maintaining a sweep account feature that will automatically transfer funds from another account in our bank or by establishing a line of credit with us. (Lines of credit are subject to approval and savings or money market accounts have a limitation on the number of times you may sweep funds from them into another account.)
